baptize

  1. ཁྲུས།

    [hon. ཁྲུས་​གསོལ། var. འཁྲུད་​གསོལ།]

    Biblical: wash; used in various verbal compounds to mean wash, bathe, or baptize: 1) ordinary washing: ལག་​པ་​ཁྲུས་​ནས། after washing hands (Mk. 7:2-4); 2) water baptism: ཡོར་​དན་​ནང་​ཁྲུས་​བླངས། they were baptized in the Jordan River (Mt. 3:6); 3) baptism with the Holy Spirit: ཁྱེད་​ལ་​དམ་​པའི་​ཐུགས་​ཉིད་​ཀྱི་​ཁྲུས་​གསོལ་​བར་​འགྱུར། you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit (Ac. 1:4), ཁོང་​གིས་​ཁྱེད་​ཚོར་​དམ་​པའི་​ཐུགས་​ཉིད་​དང་​མེའི་​ཁྲུས་​གསོལ་​བར་​འགྱུར་​རོ། He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire (Lk. 3:16).

    Buddhist: 1) ཁྲུས་​བྱ་​བ། a symbolic washing during a Bst. initiation (TRI 26); 2) ཁྲུས་​གསོལ་​བྱེད་​པ། to wash or bathe images or their surroundings in a shrine, temple, or area holding ritual objects (TDC 287); 3) ཁྲུས་​གསུམ་​བྱེད་​པ། "taking a threefold bath" - a tantric ritual (TRI 27); 4) ཆུ་​བོ་​གང་​ག་​ལ་​ཁྲུས་​བྱེད་​པ། ritual washing in the waters of the Ganges (TRC 96).

    Cognates: 1) ཁྲུས་​ལེན། or ཁྲུས་​གསོལ་​ལེན། to take or receive baptism: ཁྲུས་​ལེན་​དུ་​འོང་​བའི་​མི་​ཚོགས། the crowds who were coming to be baptized (Lk. 3:7), ང་​ཚོ་​ཡེ་​ཤུ་​མ་​ཤི་​ཀ་​དང་​གཅིག་​ཏུ་​གྱུར་​བའི་​ཁྲུས་​གསོལ་​ལེན་​ཚད། as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus (Rom. 6:3); 2) ཁྲུས་​བཞེས། [hon. of ཁྲུས་​ལེན།] to receive or take baptism: སྐུ་​ཁྲུས་​བཞེས་​པ་​ཙམ་​གྱིས། as soon as [Jesus] was baptized (Mt. 3:16); 3) ཁྲུས་​གཏོང་​། to baptize: ངས་​ཆུའི་​ཁྲུས་​གཏོང་​གིས། I baptize you with water (Mt. 3:11), ཡོ་​ཧ་​ནན་​གྱིས་​ཆུའི་​ཁྲུས་​བཏང་​། John baptized with water (Ac. 11:16); 4) ཁྲུས་​གནང་​། [hon.] to give baptism: ཡེ་​ཤུ་​ཉིད་​ཀྱིས་​ཁྲུས་​མ་​གནང་​བར། Jesus himself was not baptizing (Jn. 4:1-2); 5) ཁྲུས་​ཐོབ། or ཁྲུས་​གསོལ་​ཐོབ། to receive or get baptism: དད་​ཅིང་​ཁྲུས་​ཐོབ་​པ་​རྣམས། whoever believes and is baptized (Mk. 16:16), ཕོ་​མོ་​ཐམས་​ཅད་​ལ་​ཁྲུས་​གསོལ་​ཐོབ་​བོ། they were baptized, both men and women (Ac. 8:12); N.B. ཁྲུས། = bathing, washing, ablution; འཁྲུད། p. བཀྲུས། or འཁྲུས། f. བཀྲུ།; imp. ཁྲུས། is the transitive verb "to wash". Alternate forms (according to older references) are འཁྲུ། and ཁྲུ། .

    Biblical: to wash: ཕྱག་​མི་​བསིལ་​བ་​མཐོང་​ནས། seeing that [Jesus] did not wash his hands.

    Buddhist: ཕྱག་​བསིལ་​གྱི་​ཆུ་​གཏོར་​བར་​མཛད། [The Buddha] scattered handfuls of water (SGN 16).
