  1. སྡང་​།

    p. སྡངས། imp. སྡོང་​།

    Biblical: 1) used of men's hatred for one another: དགྲ་​ལ་​སྡོང་​ཞིག hate your enemy (Mt. 5:43), དེའི་​ཡུལ་​པས་​མི་​དྲག་​དེར་​སྡང་​བས། his subjects hated him (Lk. 19:14), མི་​གཞན་​གྱིས་​སྡང་​བ་​དང་​རང་​ཡང་​ཕན་​ཚུན་​སྡང་​མཁན་​ཡིན། being hated and hating one another (Tit. 3:3); 2) used of men's hatred of Jesus: ང་​ལ་​སྡང་​བ་​དེས་​ངའི་​ཡབ་​ལའང་​སྡང་​ངོ་​། he who hates me hates my Father as well (Jn. 15:23); 3) men's hatred of Christians: མི་​རྒྱུད་​ཐམས་​ཅད་​ཀྱིས་​ཁྱེད་​ལ་​སྡང་​འོང་​། all nations will hate you (Mt. 24:9); 4) believers' hatred of evil: ཡ་​ཧོ་​ཝར་​ཆགས་​མཁན་​ཁྱེད་​རྣམས་​ངན་​པར་​སྡང་​ཞིག་​ཀྱེ། let those who love the Lord hate evil (Ps. 97:10), ངན་​པ་​ལ་​སྡང་​བ་​དེ་​ནི་​དཀོན་​མཆོག་​ལ་​བག་​བྱེད་​པ་​ཡིན། to fear the Lord is to hate evil (Pr. 8:13); 5) used also of God's displeasure: ཡ་​ཀོབ་​ལ་​གཅེས་​པར་​འཛིན་​ཏེ། ཨེ་​སབ་​ལ་​སྡངས། Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated (Rom. 9:13 quoting Mal. 1:3), ཡ་​ཧོ་​ཝ་​ཡིས་​ར་​ཨེལ་​གྱི་​དཀོན་​མཆོག་​གིས་​འདི་​སྐད་​དུ། ང་​ནི་​ཆུང་​མ་​གཅོད་​པ་​སྡང་​ངོ་​། I, the God of Israel, hate divorce (Mal. 2:16), ཁྱེད་​ནི་​དྲང་​པོར་​བྱམས་​ཀྱང་​ངན་​པར་​སྡང་​། you have loved righteousness and hated wickedness (Heb. 1:9 quoting Ps.45:7).

    Buddhist: ཞེ་​སྡང་​། [lit. mental disposition + anger, hate] is the more common term for hatred, implying a wish to harm others which when outwardly expressed is ཁྲོ། (AMD). ཞེ་​སྡང་​གིས་​གསོད་​པ་​ནི། གསོད་​ཡག་​དེ་​ལ་​ཁོང་​ཁྲོ་​ལངས་​ནས་​གསོད་​པ། to kill on account of hatred is to kill the victim on account of the arising of anger (TRC 243). Hatred is one of the three poisons or དུག་​ཆུ་​གསུམ། which are: འདོད་​ཆགས་​དང་​། ཞེ་​སྡང་​དང་​། གཏི་​མུག attachment, hatred, and ignorance, སྡང་​སེམས། an attitude of hatred (TRC 32), ཞེ་​འཁོན་​སྡང་​འཛིན་​དང་​། རང་​གཅེས་​འཛིན། ཕྲག་​དོག hatred, selfishness, and jealousy (DLP 17), སྡང་​བའི་​དགྲ། an enemy (KPU 33), དགྲ་​ཡི་​ཕྱོགས་​ལ་​ཞེ་​སྡང་​མེ་​ལྟར་​འབར། hatred burns like fire towards an enemy (GSL 6).

    Proverbs: 1) ཞེ་​སྡང་​ལྟ་​བུའི་​སྡིག་​པ་​མེད། བཟོད་​པ་​ལྟ་​བུའི་​དཀའ་​ཐུབ་​མེད། there is no evil like hatred; no ascetic practice like patience (TRC 347); 2) ཞེས་​སྡང་​དགྲ་​བོ་​བྱམས་​པའི་​མཚོན་​གྱིས་​ཐུལ། overcome your enemy, hatred, with the weapons of love (HTE 186); 3) ཕྲག་​དོག་​པའི་​མི་​ནི་​ཞེ་​སྡང་​མེ་​ལྟར་​སྦར་​རོ། the hate of a jealous man burns like fire (CTL 277).

  2. འཁོན་​པ།

    Biblical: 1) hatred, malice, anger: ངན་​སྔགས་​དང་​། འཁོན་​སེམས། witchcraft [lit. evil mantras] and hatred (Gal. 5:20), འཇིག་​རྟེན་​དང་​མཛའ་​བ་​ནི་​དཀོན་​མཆོག་​དང་​འཁོན་​པ་​ཡིན། friendship with the world is hatred toward God (Jas. 4:4); 2) to hate: མི་​ཐམས་​ཅད་​ཀྱིས་​ཁྱེད་​ལ་​འཁོན། all men will hate you (Mt. 10:22).

    Buddhist: 1) འཁོན་​པ། is wishing for a way to hurt or attack someone. All Bst. practitioners must get rid of this attitude (AMD); 2) the འཁོན། is also a lineage of lamas known as the "combat lineage" because it is believed to be the result of conflict between a demon and a god (TRI 30).

  3. འཁོན་​དུ་​འཛིན།

    Biblical: used of God's hatred of sin: ང་​ཡ་​ཧོ་​ཝས་​ཁྲིམས་​དྲང་​པོ་​ལ་​སྡུག་​པར་​འཛིན་​པས། འཕྲོག་​བཅོམ་​གྱི་​སྦྱིན་​སྲེག་​ལ་​འཁོན་​དུ་​འཛིན་​ནོ། for I, the Lord, love justice; I hate robbery and iniquity (Is. 61:8), བྱ་​བ་​འདི་​ཐམས་​ཅད་​ལ་​ངས་​འཁོན་​དུ་​འཛིན་​ནོ། I [God] hate all this (Zechariah 8:17).

    Buddhist: འཁོན་​དུ་​འཛིན་​པ། resentment, one of the secondary afflictions (KBT 22), ཞེ་​འཁོན་​སྡང་​འཛིན། hatred (DLP 17).
